Issey Miyake

Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake is responsible for marrying technology and fashion with his trend-setting manufacturing techniques and designs.  In 1970, Issey Miyake founded the Miyake Design Studio where he created fabulous women’s fashion with his signature garment pleating. With his ground-breaking approach, garments are cut and sewn before being placed between two layers of paper, which are then put into a heat press and pleated. The garments are eventually removed from the paper and are ready to wear. Among Miyake’s most notable contributions to the fashion industry is the design of the trademark black turtlenecks worn by late Apple legend Steve Jobs. Miyake supposedly retired from the fashion industry in the ‘90s to carry on research. Despite the fact that he has stepped down from designing men and women’s collections, he continues to oversee the direction of all of the lines of clothing that fall under the Issey Miyake umbrella.
